Americans are coping with tax changes- and their resulting smaller paychecks- by pinching pennies. Almost 75% of people surveyed are cutting back on things like vacations, entertainment, meals out and everyday indulgences (like coffee drinks and manicures, for example). They’re also driving less to reduce gas spending and employing smarter shopping habits, like using coupons and comparing items before buying. Still, retailers are reporting slower sales, suggesting that even though the economy is in recovery, consumers are sticking to recession-friendly budgets. With tax season approaching, many Americans face the threat of a delayed refund. Once they do get their dough, almost 45% plan to save it, while around 40% will use the money to pay off their debts. And speaking of debt, another report found that Americans under 35 actually have less debt than they did before the financial crisis of 2008. Experts say it’s because younger consumers are putting off big-ticket purchases, like cars and houses (in part because loans are tougher to get these days). They’re also staying in school longer and getting married and having children later. While they may not have mortgages or car payments, 40% of young American households are still saddled with student loans
